Behind the scenes with Alima Pure & Joni Kabana

If you frequent our Alima Pure facebook page, you probably noticed that we added some “behind-the-scenes” photos last week. These were taken at a photo shoot we did at the studio of the amazing Joni Kabana, a renowned photographer who lives here in Portland (when she isn’t off to Ethiopia or a rodeo). If you mouse over the images in the portfolios at jonikabana.com, you can identify some of our past, present and future Alima Pure Naturally Gorgeous models.

Shoots at Joni’s studio are always a fantastic experience.  Joni’s spirit puts even the most camera-shy at ease, and she is able to bring out the sparkle in each subject. We want our Naturally Gorgeous models to look like the real women that they are, and to still capture what it is that makes them “naturally gorgeous.” Joni does that with expertise that  almost makes it look easy, instead of the complicated and personal process that it is. Since we have vowed that we will not retouch our models, what you see when you look at the photos is a combination of their natural beauty, Alima Pure cosmetics and Joni’s artistry.

The shoot we did last week was definitely one of our most successful. We squeezed in six women, each of them the very definition of Naturally Gorgeous.  They represent quite a range of ages and interests.  With the music pumping, we created and applied a makeup look for each model, then sent her off for her time in front of Joni’s lens.  We’ll be unveiling the final images over the next several months, but here are a few sneak peeks, taken on a mobile phone (so please excuse the quality).

Meet Naturally Gorgeous Candace

Meet Naturally Gorgeous Candance If you are a fan of Oregon Ballet Theatre (and who isn’t?), Candace may look familiar to you. After starting as an apprentice with OBT in 2003, Candace joined the company in 2004 and has been a soloist since 2008. Her grace and passion are two of the qualities that make her Naturally Gorgeous, but her slightly mischievous dimples and long legs certainly don’t hurt!

AP: How did you decide to become a dancer?

CB: I always knew from the time I was very small, that I wanted to dance. Once I knew that this could be a profession, I was all in. Something in me needs to tell the world something, and dancing seems like the best way for me to accomplish that.

Introducing Rahel, our Naturally Gorgeous Model

Rahel is so warm that it almost feels like she is radiating sunshine. A Portland physician who cares for women with pelvic floor disorders such as prolapse and incontinence, Rahel has also worked at the Hamlin Fistula Hospital in Addis Ababa in her native Ethiopia. It is easy to imagine the soothing effect she would have on young women suffering from the condition of fistula, which causes them to become social outcasts.

We selected Rahel as our third Naturally Gorgeous model because of her smile and warmth, but we were delighted when she expressed surprise that we could match a foundation to her skin. Prior to Alima Pure, she had never found a foundation that truly matched her skin. Can you guess from her photo which shade is hers? Read on to find out!

Meet Jenn, our second Naturally Gorgeous model!

Meet Naturally Gorgeous Model Jenn Meet Jenn, the second of our Alima Pure Naturally Gorgeous models.

When we first met Jenn, we were captivated by her ready smile and natural exuberance. She’s one of those people who, after spending just a short period of time in her presence, you feel as if you have known her for years. And if you did, maybe you’d be lucky enough to be invited to a dinner party at her house…she is apparently a fearless hostess! Read on to see…

Alima Pure: What do you do for a living?
Jenn: Office Manager at a High Tech company in downtown Portland – I fondly think of myself as the “den mom.”

Introducing Tara, our first Naturally Gorgeous model

Were you surprised to find a picture of a person in our newsletter? It is something we’ve struggled with–putting a model on a page may alienate people who can’t identify with that particular model.  And the whole issue of Photoshop is problematic.   If most cosmetics companies are using Photoshop to alter their advertising images, will we look bad next to them if we don’t?  We think smart women know that makeup doesn’t make skin look flawless, Photoshop makes skin look flawless.

We started slowly, by experimenting with employees on our blog. Our real employees (and friends, sisters and daughters) volunteered to go in front of the camera to show how our makeup looks on real people.  Not one reader complained that the women we featured were not gorgeous, 14-year-old models with perfect (or photoshopped perfect) skin, so we knew we were on the right track.

Welcome to the first installment of our Naturally Gorgeous campaign!
Our goal with this campaign is to showcase women. Women who have complex personalities and lives, diverse interests and concerns – and none of them need a trunk of products or a Photoshop expert to look Naturally Gorgeous.  They are all gorgeous without a bit of makeup on their skin because of who they are and what they do, but we had fun enhancing their natural beauty with Alima Pure.  We hope you enjoy meeting them!

Tara is a true northwest girl – born and raised in Washington state and a graduate from the University of Idaho. She lives in Portland where she works in advertising. Tara is an animal lover with an interesting approach – she recently adopted a cat to keep her dog company while she’s away at work. She’s been wearing Alima Pure for about 3 years.

AP: What surprises people about you?
TS: That I don’t really have a problem speaking my mind, or letting my personal views come out. People think I am quiet, but I say what I think.

AP: What inspires you?
TS: Making people proud of my accomplishments inspires me to do better in general.

AP: How do you define beauty?
TS: I think it comes more from confidence than physical beauty.

AP: Who would you invite to your fantasy dinner party?
TS: John Lennon, John F. Kennedy, George Harrison, Grace Kelly, Marilyn Monroe and myself.

AP: Wouldn’t you be a little concerned, having both JFK and Marilyn there?
TS: Not at all. You need some drama to have a good dinner party!

AP: What type of music are you loving lately?
TS: I’ve been listening to a lot of acoustic country.

AP: What is your biggest makeup challenge?
TS: Until I found Alima Pure, it was finding a foundation that didn’t feel heavy but still gave me great coverage.

To get Tara’s look:

We applied Beige 4 with a #25 brush, then swirled Soft Plum Satin Matte Blush to the apples of her cheeks and blended it back towards her hairline.

We went with yellow and orange-based shades to emphasize Tara’s gorgeous blue eyes, as if they need any more emphasis! Buttercream Luminous Shimmer Shadow was applied with a #37 brush from her crease to her brows, and Leone Luminous Shimmer Shadow went from lashes to crease with the #39. Brown Sugar Luminous Shimmer Shadow went in the crease with the #36 brush. A damp #33 Angle Liner Brush dipped in Paparazzi Luminous Shimmer Eyeliner lined her upper lashes, and a bit more Leone smudged under her eyes with the #31 Fine Liner Brush.

To finish, we filled in her brows with Brunette Satin Matte Shadow on the #33 Angle Liner Brush. Lips were glossed with Fig Organic Nourishing Lip Balm.

What inspired you to start your business?

I love beauty products, obviously being a makeup artist sort of naturally lends itself to trying every product on the market. But three years ago I personally had a bad reaction to some dermatologist recommended products. I never thought my skin was particularly sensitive so I looked into the ingredients and after I researched some of them I had a very eye opening moment. I stumbled onto the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics website and was hooked. I now use only organic or as natural as possible skin care/makeup/body lotions and shampoos.

It is shocking how little the cosmetics industry is regulated and how much garbage goes into commercial beauty products. But what’s more shocking is how many women are uninformed about what they’re putting on their bodies.

How do you define beauty?
I define beauty as simplicity. I like simple, clean, glowing skin. A touch of shimmer here or there, a pretty pink lip and cheek.

What do people love about your boutique?
I think people appreciate the uncluttered atmosphere and the simple lines. I tried to design a space that was open and clean.

What are the other ‘don’t miss’ gems in your neighborhood?
Emma’s Brick Oven Pizza across the street – they claim to use NYC water so the pizza is pretty amazing.

Alima Pure Profile: White Rabbit Beauty

We’re delighted to introduce Jean Knight from White Rabbit Beauty, one of Alima Pure’s Online retail partners. White Rabbit Beauty carries a full line of natural cosmetics and skin care products, and is based in lovely Half Moon Bay, California. They primarily offer online sales, but occasionally devoted clients drop by for coffee.

1. What inspired you to start White Rabbit Beauty?
A small battered red tabby in Plano, Texas. I brought him home, named him Plano, and he’s doing great now, but that was a tipping point for me. It forced me to confront animal cruelty head-on. As part of that, I wanted to buy only cruelty-free products, but finding true cruelty-free products was difficult. In talking with other women, I discovered we all preferred to buy cruelty free, but we wanted good products, too. White Rabbit Beauty was born to showcase great cruelty-free products.

2. Please tell us about your background & past experiences?
I’m an environmental engineer with a water resources specialty and worked for many years on hazardous waste cleanups. Like many people living near Silicon Valley, I jumped to the computer industry during the Internet boom, working for startups in almost every conceivable capacity. White Rabbit is now my third career. At first glance, people say “Huh!?” But there is a common thread: all have been challenging and rewarding. And the environmental work has been very relevant to White Rabbit Beauty, particularly in evaluating conflicting claims about ingredients. Some issues are clear-cut, but most are not, and my chemistry and toxicology knowledge has definitely informed my decisions about ingredients. My environmental work also taught me that once people fear something, you rarely can reverse that fear, even if there is no basis for the fear. That is why the rampant misinformation on the Internet is so distressing; the fear it generates is almost certainly more damaging to health than any ingredient is. Continue reading

Alima Pure Profile: Ciao Bella Day Spa

We’re pleased to introduce the gorgeous Ciao Bella Day Spa in Littleton Colorado.

1. What inspired you to start your business?
Having spent 20+ years in corporate finance and international business, I continued to experience a restlessness to do more.  I wanted to create something of my own; a business my family could work at and build together well into the future.  I had a vision to create a beautiful oasis that would become a haven for peace and well-being.  Together we created Ciao Bella Day Spa of Littleton. Alima Pure Profile: The Sweet Spot

This week we’re delighted to introduce Lara Olsha, founder of The Sweet Spot in Seattle.

1. What inspired you to start the Sweet Spot?
In 2002 my mom was diagnosed with Stage 4 Colon Cancer.  I wanted to volunteer for the American Cancer Society’s Look Good Feel Better program and went to beauty school in order to do that.  While in school I read an article about sugaring and it really intrigued me- particularly because there is no cross contamination like waxing.  I taught myself to sugar.  Traveling back and forth to Hawaii to assist my mom through her treatments became a strain on my finances so in addition to my career as a Respiratory Therapist I started sugaring.  The rest is history. Alima Pure Profile: Green and Greener

This Week we’re delighted to introduce the fabulous Alegre of Green and Greener in Los Angeles (Valley Village). Green and Greener is an eco-living general store and design center. Alegre has graciously taken a moment out of her busy schedule as a store proprietor and new mother (congratulations!!) to answer our questions.

1. What inspired you to start your business?
As a green consumer I was frustrated that there was no ONE place where you could find a range of green products, and that the mainstream retailers “green” options were really not much better than their traditional counterparts.  This frustration, coupled with the fact that I knew I could provide the service of vetting products and providing information to people because of my knowledge as a LEED AP, lead to the creation of Green and Greener.  I call G&G an “eco general store” because we carry a wide range of products, with a focus on necessities.  I buy functional, non-toxic, eco-friendly products as locally as possible and from the most socially responsible businesses I can.  G&G also has the community feel of a traditional general store as it has become a resource for people to learn more about how they can incorporate sustainability into every aspect of their lives from bath and body to paint, from cloth diapers to mattresses.
