Oil as moisturizer

Many of us have been frightened away from using facial oil, but in fact it can be marvelously nourishing and protective. In the summertime my skin seems to be fine without it, but as the weather changes I find it’s the perfect natural moisturizer.

I like to use a couple of drops of olive oil after cleansing my skin, while it is still a bit damp. The oil seals in the residual moisture on my skin and protects it from dehydration. Interestingly, I’ve never experienced breakouts from using the oil, though I avoid using it on very warm days. It takes a couple of minutes of the oil to be absorbed into my skin, and occasionally I’ll find I need to blot a bit before applying my foundation.

Grapeseed oil is generally recommended for oily skin, jojoba and olive oil for ‘normal’ skin, and camellia and rose hip seed oil are rich enough for dry or mature skin. You may find you need to experiment a bit, depending on the state of your skin and current weather conditions. I’d recommend starting with olive oil, though, if you have some handy. It’s rich in antioxidents, convenient, and inexpensive. I keep a tiny bottle of it with my other skincare supplies, so I don’t have to deal with a huge bottle in the kitchen when I want a few drops.

Have you used oil as a moisturizer? Which oil have you used? Was it beneficial for your skin?

blessings,

Kate

I use almond oil for my face and swear by it. I apply a couple (3-5) drops of the oil to my clean face, including the delicate area around my eyes. This oil is one of the least greasy oils and absorbs into your skin quickly. Plus, its not known to clog pores and is great for all skin types. I highly recommend trying it.

Hi Nicole,

Almond oil sounds lovely – I think it also has the advantage of not smelling ‘salady’! Thanks for visiting!

I love to use coconut oil on my face. In the evening before going to bed I use it to remove my make up. I apply a moderate amount and then wipe it off with a moist wash cloth or the Alima Pure Microfiber Cloth. Then I re-apply a small amount as an overnight moisturizer. It seems to calm and heal my sensitive skin.

Hi Kate

I use organic rosehip oil which is great, especially for around the eyes, I wouldn’t recommend it for people who are prone to breakouts though, I have also been using an organic oil blend called cellular radiance serum from an Australian company called Akin, (I’m not sure if it is available in the US though).

I have loved using rosehip oil, but never tried it under my eyes – what a great idea. It’s a bit heavier and more nourishing than olive oil. Thanks for the suggestion Liz. Is your skin especially dry Myra? I have been a little leery of coconut oil, though I love the scent. I have heard it is wonderful as a hair conditioner as well. Thanks for the tips Myra and Liz!

Coconut oil actually feels very light and cooling. It’s solid at room temperature, so may look heavy, but if you put some in a smaller container and run warm water on the outside of the container to melt a small bit of it, you can then pour out the liquified oil to use on your skin. I tried Myra’s suggestion of using it to remove makeup and it was very nice and soothing.

I love strawberryseed oil for removing eye make-up, it has a wonderful scent and some anti-aging properties. Coconut oil I use after shower to moisturize my body and sometimes on my face too.

Ok, I’m convinced – I’m going to try coconut soon – I love the scent, too. Thanks Lesley!

I use Rosehip seed oil on my body and Jojoba oil on my face as it apparently dissolves blockages from pores. I use a Hyaluronic Acid serum rubbed together with the oil in the palm of my hand before pattin on as it helps the oil to absorb better.
